Eyes like peacock feathers

Prairie bird…

put her ear to the ground, listened to the Earth’s heart beating

in fleeting August light

she settled

breathing.

Time stopped.

He opened up the cage and put his hand inside,

warm,

over

and the prairie bird came and sat on his finger.

He needed something to remember her by

in december

in sorrow

in english

in linger.

Peacock feathered eyes he painted her

in a poem

and wings on her shoulders he drew

to haunt his uninspired dreams with

before summer was over.

Tall and svelt he was and she followed him for awhile

with a song

the prairie bird

Eyes like peacock feathers she had

oh youth!

the voice that called her

the boy

she used to put her wings around

were both

gone

Eyes like peacock feathers, he loved her so much
