Adesso dormi, amore mio
It’s almost mezzanotte on your side of the world
And I believe you never completely understood me
Remember our own side of the world
the flowerless balcony
the rented room
“You don’t love me anymore” you said scherzando
then poured some cheap flavorless wine
in our two cheap stolen wine glasses
and on that night
di luna piena
you had already lost me
you did the best you could
caro mio
but I’m not coming back
to orthodoxism, rented rooms, flavorless wine, mediocre nights and you
don’t wait for me
please, not a moment more
I don’t belong there anymore
Io non torno più
from my summer hallucination
where I get lost on narrow streets on red and light pink Vespa scooters
watch wild flowers bloom at my window every morning
and the bambini come to play in Piazza dell’Amfiteatro di Lucca every day
at exactly 6 a’clock in the afternoon
at night, before I fall asleep, I stare at the moon
Yesterday
I had watermelon slices wrapped in prosciutto crudo for breakfast,
pistachio gelato for lunch
and gnocchi with pesto and parmigiano for dinner
went for a long passeggiata
and found peace in an empty small catholic church called “San Miniato al Monte”
where I stood in silence
and prayed
I’m visiting Siena and San Gimignano
tomorrow
and maybe love me some gorgonzola sandwitches on one of those red and white tablecloths
in Manarola
some Montepulciano wine
of course I’ll think of things
from time to time,
then drink more wine
I’ll smell of grilled calamari I polpettine in a small ristorante
by the sea
and in Tuscan piazzette
under suspended lampari
in the old Tuscan patois
paisani serenaders
and the saddest pagliacci
will serenade me
Adesso dormi, amore mio
It’s almost mezzanotte on your side of the world
Don’t wait for me,
I’ve changed
under the Tuscan sun
on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea
i’m finally home
Adesso resto qui

Abracci from sunny Italy
